IVF Specialists Now Focusing on Embryo Implantation Failure

Latest studies indicate that the IVF success rate hasn’t improved for a decade now, yet millions of couples flock to numerous IVF centres with hope to combat infertility.

For pregnancy to occur, an embryo must implant in the uterine wall, but in a majority of IVF treatments, the embryo normally fails to implant in the uterus. Matters like these are a leading trigger for the hiking IVF costs as couples can’t attain pregnancy within one treatment cycle – miscarriages that lead to depression.

In a struggle to reach the bottom line as to why embryos fail to implant in the uterine lining, researchers at La Trobe University and the Hudson Institute of Medical Research are determined to understand the heartbreaking mystery of implantation failure, a factor that affects 2 in 6 couples.

Aim of the Study

The natural mechanism of conception begins with fertilization that generally takes place in the Fallopian Tube. The fertilized egg slopes down to the uterus where it implants in the uterine wall after which conception occurs.

The latest discovery indicates that the uterine lining and the embryo commune through the tiny bubble-like structures termed as the Extracellular Vesicles. These Extracellular Vesicles always send signals to the embryo resulting in the alteration of the outer layer so that it implants successfully in the womb, after which a placenta is formed.

According to Dr. Greening said, heading the research, implantation failure may occur in case the Vesicles fail to send the right signals to the embryo.

Current efforts are aimed at developing personalized medications and supplements to improve implantation success rates in couples. These medications and supplements are intended to alter signaling which generally shows a major breakthrough in the IVF sector.

Prevailing IVF Success Rate per Treatment Cycle

A majority of couples require 2 to 3 IVF treatment cycles to finally conceive. The latest studies indicate that a woman has a 33% chance of getting pregnant in her first treatment round (cycle).

Women aged under 30 years have the highest success rate, whereas those aged below 45 have the lowest rate. Studies also indicate that a woman’s odds of getting pregnant are high in the first attempt, after which they reduce with every other attempt.

Normally, a majority of couples who seek IVF conceive during the second or third treatment round, making, whereas 7% of women conceive after the eighth treatment round.

Certain scenarios of multiple IVF failures are annually witnessed in couples, but their hope still remains alive in order to have a baby or babies. Unfortunately, the emotional and financial stress exerted is extremely painful.

Some couples live to remember certain incidences where they finally got positive results, but it only ended in miscarriages. Painful as it is, many had started hearing the heartbeat of their babies.

Such cases of repetitive IVF cycles are valued to be over $250 million, but with the latest move of improving embryo implantation, the total would be certainly cut down.

Researchers believe that improving embryo implantation would extremely cut IVF failure, curb the financial stress exerted, and result in efficacy.
